How to Make Your Bedroom a Relaxing Space

Hiya! Hope you all had a wonderful June. It was a busy month for me, quite a few family birthdays. For my son’s birthday we took him to the Harry Potter Warner Bros. Studio Tour…..WOW is what I will say. The tour really encapsulates the magic of the film, The Great Hall and Forbidden Forest were incredible but my favourite was Diagon Alley and of course seeing the castle, it was so amazing and magical. I would definitely recommend a visit. It even had Harry’s bedroom under the stairs!

Talking of bedrooms, how do you feel about yours? For me, my bedroom is my sanctuary and my escape. I look forward to going into my bedroom, it is a place for me to relax and unwind and most importantly, sleep! I have to make a conscious effort not to allow it to become the washing dumping ground or the place where I store the Christmas or birthday gifts that I’m hiding. When that happens I start to feel claustrophobic and the mess affects my sleep.

So what makes a relaxing bedroom? Firstly, your bedroom should be kept tidy and free of clutter so your first step should be to declutter and give your room a good clean. Did you know that you should dust and wipe down surfaces, vacuum or sweep the floor and change your bed linen on a weekly basis? On a monthly basis it is suggested that you clean your windows and vacuum under the bed and every few months deep clean the mattress, wash curtains or blinds and clean light fittings. On a daily basis though what will really help you feel content in your bedroom is by making your bed and decluttering as you go for example putting clean clothes away.

To create a calming atmosphere you should opt for soothing hues. Colours that can be brought into your bedroom to initiate that oasis of calm are blues, greens and pinks, in particular, soft, muted, gentle versions of those colours. They will help encourage that serene ambiance you want when relaxing in your own space.

The colours in this bedroom exude serenity. There is the relaxing green mixed with the natural colours and materials of the headboard and throw and then the very soft pink of the bedding. The use of plants just emphasise the calmness of the space. You can totally imagine yourself relaxing here after a long day and feeling utterly peaceful.

Soft lighting is beneficial in evoking feeling of peace and tranquillity in a bedroom. It offers a warm and cosy feeling and heavily influences a relaxing atmosphere. Soft lighting sends signals to your brain that it is time to unwind and prepare for sleep and therefore promotes a better sleep cycle. You can create soft lighting in a variety of ways. One is to opt for table lamps with soft fabric shades however if space is an issue, wall sconces are a great option as they won’t take up space on bedside tables. A dimmer switch can be installed in order for you to control the level of light you want for your specific needs. This rechargeable wall light from Pooky is a brilliant option for a wall lamp. There are also a variety of shades in different colours and patterns so you won’t struggle to find one in the colour you want.

Have you considered incorporating some relaxing scents such as lavender or chamomile? Not only can they help create a relaxing ambiance and reduce nervous tension but they can improve sleep quality. If sleep is an issue for you be sure to choose blackout curtains or blinds. Other ways you can improve your sleep are to ensure there is fresh air circulation, keep a window open as your room shouldn’t be too hot. Your head should be facing south and the bed should not be in line with the door. Finally, try to invest in good quality bedding!

I am now off to give my bedroom a good clean and get my bedsheets on the line!
