Best Desks for Small Spaces

I just wanted to say a big thank you for bearing with me. If you’ve seen my social media posts you will know that I had to take some time out due to a very difficult period for me and my family. I am back at work but as you may know I am 100% a family gal and family for me comes first so I have been prioritising them the last couple of months.

Now….at the risk of sounding very British, we’ve had some lovely weather of late, so sunny and bright. It makes such a difference to my day when the weather is so nice, not least because I can hang the washing on the line! I have been spending quite a bit of time in the garden, giving it a good tidy, taking things to the tip and having a good clear up. I’m hoping for a good summer so lots of time can be spent enjoying the garden.

As you know, since January I have been working on my home office and I’ll let you into a little secret as so far I haven’t shared much information….it’s in the garden! I was lucky enough to purchase a cabin from Facebook Marketplace and even more fortunate to have amazing family who helped dismantle it and rebuild it for me! My husband has worked tirelessly to get it ready for me and we’re almost finished. Whilst he has focussed on the build, I, of course have been focusing on the interior and I can’t wait to share it with you when it’s finished.

Whilst furniture shopping for my cabin it got me thinking of all the different shapes and sizes of people’s home offices. One thing that came out of the dreaded C word was that so many of us now work from home. When choosing our homes, did we consider that we would be working from home as much as we do? Were adaptations required to incorporate a working area under the stairs? Or was that neglected box room that was used for extra storage converted into a space you now spend one third of your waking hours….30% of your time? Or have you had to squeeze a desk into your bedroom?

Either way you will have needed a work station of some kind so this month I am looking at the best desks for small spaces.

The main advantage of this affordable desk from Wayfair is that it easily folds away at the end of your working day. If your desk has been squeezed into your bedroom it’s a good way to ‘close down’ your working day so that when you go to bed you are not looking at your full working area. It features ample stationary storage and a blackboard for lists and things you don’t want to forget. For safety reasons this desk needs to be fixed to a wall so you’d need to be fully sure where you want it before you secure it.

This desk from desktronic.co.uk is height adjustable which would be really handy if you share your workstation with your partner who requires the desk at a different height to you. It can be adjusted from 72cm high to 122cm so perfect as a dual work station. Or perhaps you stand up while you work? There are proven benefits of this such as increased productivity, better posture and increased energy. The desk also has the added benefit of having charging points integrated so you can charge your devices at any time. It is a safe desk to have around children as it has rounded edges to avoid any unwanted injuries. It is available in 3 table top sizes with 3 frame colours and 5 table top colours to ensure that it works within the style of your home.

This hideaway desk could potentially fit in with your current furniture. It comes in 3 different colours; cream, taupe or natural and has pretty rattan detail. If you wanted to transform the space you’ll be working from it also has matching furniture so that it wouldn’t look out of place from your working area. If you were to have it in your lounge you could purchase the matching sideboard and TV unit or if you work from your bedroom or spare room you could purchase the matching wardrobe and bedside tables so that it easily blends into your home. It has useful storage compartments and again, once the shelf is up and the doors are closed, you can switch off from work for the day!

The ultimate desk for a small space is this Capuano desk from Wayfair.co.uk! This floating desk doesn’t take up any floor space and its overall dimensions are 25 x 90 x 35cm. No assembly is required for the desk which provides a mainboard for a laptop or notebook and a small shelf for any stationery essentials. It does require being fixed to a wall but this is a perfect solution for a workspace under the stairs or behind a door in an already used room.

Lastly this desk from Amazon is ideal for dual purpose. If you are sharing your workspace with your bedroom this can be used as a desk and dressing table. The 2 drawers could be divided into work and cosmetic items. It is a short, space saving desk with handy storage pockets and a hook to store any essential items.

As I’ve mentioned previously, I have designed a home office for a client who requested that it needs to incorporate a dressing area. I selected a desk that works for the client’s role but chose a space saving make up unit to allow for her to have storage for her cosmetics without using precious floor space.

Just because it is a work area doesn’t mean it can’t be stylish and reflect your personality! You have to spend a lot of your day working and you want to enjoy being there.

I hope this has given you some inspiration for your own home office. I will be sharing images from my cabin office very soon so keep your eyes peeled.
